The sun is shining, the birds are singing and Londoners are fanning their sweaty pits over each other on the Underground… Ermegah I think summer is here! * Touches wood, crosses fingers, throws salt over each shoulder*.
This week to celebrate the start of summer, I’ve partnered with Rekorderlig Cider to offer you the chance to win a £250 voucher for one of Sweden’s hottest fashion brands, perfect for refreshing your summer wardrobe! Read on to find out how you can enter…
Don’t you just love the beginning of the British Summer? We long for it all through the miserable first few months of the year, the bucket and spade dusty in the cupboard, along with the picnic hamper we’ve been yet to use. We crave just a day to slap some factor 50 onto our pale English skin and strut around like proud lobsters, before bombarding social media with complaints about our sweaty upper lips.
Unlike us grumbling Brits, the Swedish have a dedicated day for celebrating the start of summer. I mean their winters can get pretty dark and lengthy so I’m not surprised that they come together to rejoice Midsummer, revelling with flowers, greenery and even a spot of maypole dancing, believed to bring good fortune and health.
With last week heating up far hotter than my brown haired head could cope with, Allyn and I took to our favourite secret garden to start our summer the Swedish way (just with more lying around and less energetic maypole-ing).
The Geffrye Museum in Hoxton is an idyllic collection of 18th century almshouses, once a bequest for former Lord Mayor of London Robert Geffrye. Inside they now exhibit London homes through the centuries, whilst surrounded by peaceful gardens perfect for picnicking. Upon entering the tall gates you feel as those you’ve stepped back in time, especially when donning a vintage dress and hamper!
In true midsummer fashion, we plonked ourselves down among the greenery for a peaceful picnic, setting up shop with my favourite alfresco snacks and some refreshingly light Rekorderlig Cider.
Blending fruit flavours with pure Swedish spring water, a satisfying sip of this fresh drink is sure to start your summer the Swedish way! Passionfruit and strawberry and lime are our favourite flavours, served chilled with ice and zest.
We spent the afternoon nibbling on green salads and light bites, cooling down in the shade with our mouth-watering fresh ciders. But before the sunshine tired us out completely, we popped off to explore the rest of the Geffrye Museum’s beautiful green spaces.
Around the back of the museum are a series of period gardens including a patch of fragrant herbs and even a home for London’s chubby bees. Wandering among the shrubbery you can’t help feeling as though you’re in a National Trust estate, until you look up and see the Overground train sneakily arriving at Hoxton station.
So the bit you’ve all been waiting for…
How would you like to win a whopping £250 to spend at one of the most talked about independent fashion stores in London? Swedish born Acne Fashion is a celebrated label, loved by the likes of Rihanna and Alexa Chung. They have some beaut accessories and new arrivals, perfect for updating your summer wardrobe. The below are just a few on my wishlist…
